Hi, I’m Vivian Baruch & I’m a relationship coach, counsellor & therapist. I’d like to give you a few tips on how you can make sure your counsellor is well trained in couples and relationship work.
Most counsellors do want to help you escape pain and disappointment in relationships so you can develop a fulfilling, healthy and loving partnership.
But it’s important for you as a consumer to be informed and educated about how to find the best counselling and therapy for you when you are looking for it.
You may not realise that not all counsellors, therapists and psychologists are specifically trained in relationship counselling. General counselling training covers only one or two units related to working with couples & relationships. Specific post-graduate training in couples, marriage or relationship counselling is necessary and important to achieve effective results with your relationship issue.
If you’re looking for relationship coaching, counselling or therapy, I encourage you to interview your prospective counsellor (via phone or email) before making a first appointment. Ask the counsellors what training and how long they trained to work specifically with couples and relationships. If they’re appropriately qualified, their answers should reassure you.
Your relationship is important. It’s your right to make sure that you only work with someone that is specifically trained in couples and relationships work, to give you the best chance of getting the results you want. It’s unfortunate that some therapists and counsellors in Australia are working with couples without having specific training or skills in this area.
For your information, I have undergraduate and post graduate university level training specifically in couples counselling and couples therapy.
I’ve also been working with individuals and couples since 1981 and I’m always engaged in growing my skills by attending workshops and trainings, as well as reading the latest research in the field of relationship work.
