Feedback Informed Treatment tracks my therapy results
I’ve now been using Feedback Informed Treatment (FIT) via an automated system called MyOutcomes to track my therapy results for twenty years.
“FIT is an empirically supported, pantheoretical approach for evaluating and improving the quality and effectiveness of behavioral health services. It involves routinely and formally soliciting feedback from clients regarding the therapeutic alliance and outcome of care and using the resulting information to inform and tailor service delivery” (1).
FIT is not a specific treatment model or a method of diagnosis. Because it is not a model, it may be added to or integrated with any model of practice; and applied to all diagnostic categories.
“FIT operationalizes the American Psychological Association’s (APA) definition of evidence-based practice. Routine use of the ORS and SRS involves “the integration of the best available research… and monitoring of patient progress…that may suggest the need to adjust the treatment… (e.g., problems in the therapeutic relationship or in the implementation of the goals of the treatment)” (2).
Gold Standard Outcome Tracking and Reporting Systems
MyOutcomes is one of three outcome tracking systems recommended by The International Center for Clinical Excellence (ICCE).
It is well known that MyOutcomes is the Gold Standard Outcomes Tracking and Reporting system for therapy outcomes. It is included in the SAMHSA’s (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) Registry of Evidence Based Programs and Practices.
Three randomized clinical trials (RCTs) enabled MyOutcomes to be recognised as providing and achieving evidence based practice status. Watch Scott Miller PhD explain Feedback Informed Treatment in under 5 minutes.
In effect, one size does fit all. Using this feedback-informed method in my practice allows me to be evidence based across all my clients. And, more important, MyOutcomes is evidence based at the individual client-therapist level. Collecting client feedback monitors whether this therapeutic approach provided by this therapist is benefiting this client.
This outcome tracking system provides a seemingly contradictory way to become evidence based across all my clients. It helps me tailor my services to your individual needs, preferences, and culture. This is truly evidence based practice one client at a time.
